Norwich based Young States are a refreshingly all female rock group (as opposed to all female pop) consisting of Georgia (Vocals/Bass), Libby (Guitar/Vocals), Amy (Guitar) and Molly (Drum). Their debut 4 track EP Down To You is out now, so I’m having a listen on behalf of Mind Noise Network.

The first song No More has a deceiving acoustic opening line before the noise kicks in a few seconds late, and a strong vocal performance comes in immediately drawing thoughts of Lzzy Hale. Feedback opens with some very nice riff work for the hard rockers that might be listening, and throughout we are definitely leaning more towards the heavier and harder alternative rock of Evanescence and Lacuna Coil than mainstream pop punk; these girls are definitely here to rock!

Stay opens with some nice drum work which immediately has me in mind of certain Rise Against pieces, and the powerful but clean vocals cut through very nicely from the chugging rhythm behind it. Passing Time is the final song on the EP, and there is no letting up on the rocking from start to finish. The varying tempos and instrumental sections (not merely solo’s!) of Passing Time really allow the girls to show off their musical ability on the instruments.

With the slightly male domination of Rock, it is too easy to slip into the mindset of thinking of Young States in terms of their gender, or other successful female fronted rock bands, but the truth is that is irrelevant. All 4 members sound fantastic, and the band feels very tight. Drums and bass lay down some wonderful lines, and the 2 guitars provide great tones together. Keep an eye out for these young ladies, I would imagine they will be playing somewhere near you very soon.

Paul's recommended track: Passing Time
