Walk In Coma are a five-piece metal band hailing from Essex, describing themselves as a  fusion of Machine Head and Pantera with a little sprinkling of Architects in there for good measure. After sharing stages with the likes of Breed 77 and Funeral For A Friend then needless to say I’m expecting good things from this new EP release.

After a short piano-led intro, opening track Raising Hell kicks into gear with some big riffs and vocalist Alex Adlington certainly sounds like he draws a little inspiration from Lamb of God’s Randy Blythe. It’s a ferocious track, not the catchiest but certainly get’s things off to a good start.

Next up is Nein which took me a little by surprise, totally switching gears by slowing things down somewhat and introducing clean vocals. The verses are reminiscent of what you might hear on an InMe release until the chorus kicks in with it’s chunky riffs from guitarists Mark Elliot and James Cater, aggressive vocal attack and a thumping bass line courtesy of basis Tom Case.

Asylum is a much more memorable track with its frenetic drumming track laid down by Joe Reid. This seems to be the style that’s most well-suited for the band where they can inject some pace into the track as well as incorporate the heaviness of the bands that influenced them - the standout track of the EP by far.

Penultimate track Retreat is possibly the heaviest track on the release, but as well as crushing the listener’s ear drums it manages to incorporate the groove of Pantera and Lamb of God which adds an element of catchiness to it.

Bringing proceedings to a conclusion is The Fire which is another hit and miss track. Once again the heavier aspects of the song far exceed the more experimental areas where they attempt to show off their ability to diversify. Personally I feel that this is the weaker aspect of the composition.

Walk In Coma definitely show some promise on their latest release, which for me doesn’t quite hit the mark as a total package. If the band stuck to the heavier formula then they certainly have the tools at their disposal to become the UK’s answer to Lamb of God. But they should spend some time developing the more melodic areas of their music if they’re to continue that style of songwriting. I look forward to hearing what they achieve on a full-length album - it'll be worth a listen.

James' recommended track: Asylum

For fans of: Machine Head, Pantera and Architects

Can you see these guys in the UK?: There is a date in Chelmsford on 24th October supporting We Are The Catalyst. Not sure on much else though.
