With an EP our soon and a UK tour starting in the not too distant future, we catch up with Saltlake dummer Ash Powell.

Hi Ash, thank for talking to us. So first up, how did Saltlake come about?

The three of us have been playing music together for around five years, under different line ups and different band names through our time together at school and college. In the last two years we have seriously worked on developing our sound as a band and putting all our focus in to this band and the music we write.

You've played a good number of gigs in your time as a band, what's bee the highlight?

In terms of performance we would probably say our official relaunch in a dingy little club last April, we had taken some time out and had completely rebranded and changed our sound etc. so to come back and play one of our best shows as a band was really cool. However if we're talking in terms of capacity we would have to say when we played Islington Academy 2 a few years back, that was a really cool show.

And how about the lowlight?

As a band to get to the stage where we play shows in front of big crowds we have obviously played our fair share of shows to a small amount of people. But for us this isn't really a big deal and we never really get down if there isn't a great turn out at some of our shows, we understand that in this industry you have to take the highs with the lows.

These Broken Bones is due to come out in about a month. What can you tell us about it?

We started writing some of the songs for the EP around a year ago when we took some time out to rebrand and modify our sound, we wrote 'These Broken Bones' and 'Breathe' first, then 'Breathe' was rewritten to feature on the 2015 edition of the BIMM Album, which in turn really helped us work on our sound for the EP. With this EP we really wanted to take a much more radio-friendly approach with a couple of the tracks such 'The Unknown' and 'How The West Was Won', combining heavy rock riffs with 'poppy' melodies. We said from day one when writing this EP that we'd rather be the heaviest thing on the pop/mainstream spectrum rather than be the softest thing on the rock/metal side of things.

What inspirations were there behind the EP?

When we started writing we tried the songs without trying to sound like any band in particular, and by doing this the songs came much more naturally and the writing process was a lot smoother as we weren't trying to sound like a certain band etc. and one thing we are extremely pleased with on the EP is that every song takes its own style and that no song on the record is the same as the next one.

Where can people get their ears on a copy?

So 'These Broken Bones' is set for release on November 2nd, and people will be able to get physical copies of the EP from online or at our shows, and digital copies of the EP will be available on itunes and Spotify etc.

You've got a tour coming up soon, where can people see you and why should they come out?

Yeah we're heading out on our first tour this November playing shows around the South and Midlands. People can come and see us in Reading, Brighton, Tunbridge Wells, Croydon, Birmingham, Southampton and Hastings.  We like to think that we at our best when we are performing live. The songs take on a new life and have so much energy when we perform, so you should come down and check us out at one of the shows.

Any bands you'd love to tour with?

We are always striving to reach new heights as a band, so if there are any opportunities to play with any band of a similar genre that are bigger than ourselves, we will always try and take that opportunity.

How are you planning on getting around on this tour? Old school back of a van job or are you creatures of luxury?

We are looking to hire a van to get around on the tour, at the same time we've booked shows in areas where we know we can sleep on peoples floors if needs be.

Finally, any parting words?

Our EP 'These Broken Bones' comes out on 2nd November, and that you should come and check us out on our forthcoming UK tour, thanks very much!
