Profane And The Sacred -

Chapter 1: A Long Time Coming

By Aimée Thomson - 1 March 2015

London four piece Profane And The Sacred released their debut album Chapter 1: A Long Time Coming earlier this week. The content is nine tracks worth of chugging guitars, gripping, growly vocals and some pretty intense drumming. For stoner rock fans this release is pretty exciting news. Profane And The Sacred have a sound that could fill even the biggest of stadiums, when listening to this album I think of drinking beer, head banging and a lot of air guitaring. Taking influence from bands like 90’s stoner rock pioneers Kyuss, Sleep and Down, Profane And The Sacred are set for something massive.

The album kicks off with ‘Bench’ which starts as an acoustic piece before building into a dark, heavy riff, before picking up again and developing into something moody yet brilliant.

One key thing I have noticed with this album, having given it a few listens, is that the lead lines are well thought out and often compliment the vocals. This is most apparent in the second number, ‘Bleed That Stone’, where between most of the sections the guitar is screaming out over the other instrumentation.

‘From the top’ is lucky enough to have a video, although after dropping this album on rock fans I’m sure there will be more of them to follow. The drumming in this particular number is so on point, it’s impossible not to tap along to it, or smack the desk and pretend you’re headlining Wembley. Either way this track, with it’s dark tones and catchy riffs, should be on any drinking tunes playlist.

Another track to be excited about is ‘Words’. This song is also featured on the bands Youtube, backed up by a lyric video. For me, this song is all about the vocals. It’s very rare to find a singer who can growl through words yet give them so much melody. Each section of this song flows with ease, which I’ve found to be a common trait for Profane And the Sacred.

‘A New Leaf’ closes the album, this track threw me by surprise as I was waiting for every instrument to kick off and leave us with a chaotic end, but it doesn’t. The melody builds and creates something rather eerie. It’s an unusual choice but the contrast between this track and the rest gives the end a bang without it quite literally being a bang.
