Introducing: Moriaty

By Daniel King - 17 January 2015

As you may have noticed, the 2 piece rock band has really taken off over the past year or so. The biggest winners of this trend so far have been Royal Blood with their meteoric rise to fame in 2014. It seems that being a two piece gives a band freedom to experiment and break free of the conventional boundaries that have constrained rock music for the past few decades.

This is where I introduce to you Moriaty. They are a Devon based 2 piece that look set to give Royal Blood and the like a run for their money. 2014 was a huge year for these guys having been featured on BBC Introducing and in a glowing full page article in Classic Rock magazine. They recently released their current single, Jealous MF, which was part of our Track Of The Week feature in the week beginning 12th January 2015. Probably their biggest acheivement to date.

Just a quick look through their videos on YouTube and you can see that they have a tonne of variation in the tracks they’ve released to date. To kick off 2015 in true style, they are releasing a new single called Bones on 26th January 2015, featuring a ‘breathtaking guest appearance’. On top of this, throughout 2015 there will be various collaborations, one of which includes throwing a bit of hip hop into the mix.

Having spent much of their career so far building up a local fan base (plus the small matter of a three week tour of the French Alps...it's a hard life!), they look to be using 2015 to expand upon that and break the chains of South West England.

We caught up with Jordan to have a chat and find out what makes them tick, what their plans are for 2015 and who they’d like to team up with:

Tell us a bit about Moriaty? Who are the influences?

We love all kinds really.  As as band it started out with the old blues guys: Blind Willie Mctell, Robert Johnson, Son House. But we listen to a lot of Rage, Sabbath, Zeppelin, Jonny Cash and Snoop Dogg.  But driving back from shows its always The Ricky Gervais Show podcasts.  That influences more than music, something we can laugh about.

You've done a fair bit on the continent but haven’t focused as much on the UK yet, is that something you plan on doing?

Yeah were doing a bigger UK tour this February, from Glasgow to Newquay.  We’ve gigged quite extensively in the South of England, but its a ball ache to go North from Devon... glad we’re finally making the trip.

How are you finding recreating the sound live?

I’m not particularly one for recreating anything live.  I want people to walk away from the shows with a different look at our music.  I use everything live we used to make the album, basically a combo of amps and pedals, and the album didn’t have any bass or extras on it - a few loops here an there.  But we like the fact that people can’t believe theres only two of us.  Its a different animal in many respects, but more enjoyable in the flesh... like a lot of things!

How was it being featured on the BBC Introducing and in magazines like Classic Rock?

It's great, the guys at BBC Introducing are smashing and have become good friends of ours. The Classic Rock thing, which was like a full page spread, was pretty cool.  That and hearing your song on Radio 1 is as good as people say it is... an unexpected feeling of pride I suppose.

You team up with a huge variety of musicians on a regular basis. If you could do an album with someone different on each track, think RnFnR by Slash, who would you have?

Noel Gallagher

Snoop

Dave Grohl

Tim Commerford

Dr Dre

Imani from The Pharcyde

Thom Yorke

Chuck Berry

Paul McCartney

Chris Wolstenholme

Be a mean album that!

Sounds impressive, get your new PR on the phone! In a world where people have more access to music than ever before, why should people be coming to you for their fix?

Because were not Lost Prophets?

Works for me. What has been the highlight in the relatively short Moriaty career?

Meeting Thom Yorke.

That was a pretty eacy one for you! What's on the Moriaty bucket list?

Tour Japan and play Glastonbury.

As a relatively new band, what are your opinions on streaming services like Spotify?

Spotify is an interesting one.  Matthew, my partner in crime loves it.  He listens to all his music via it. I, on the other hand, like to feed Apple’s corporate pocket and buy everything from iTunes. Only because it makes it easier to spread across my devices - but Matty doesn’t buy that bullshit.  He wants what he wants and he wants it for free.  At the end of the day, the music industry has changed, there is an endless supply of music out there, which ultimately devalues music. As a result, things like Napster and Spotify are going to be part of the way we consume music, so what the hell.  At least Spotify pretend to pay artists.

Unfortunately, it is sucking the blood from the very industry it's dwelling in.  The less money in records, the less record companies wanna put in, it means the divide between rich and poor bands has got bigger, not smaller.  Its too easy for anyone to upload some music, make a vid and saturate the industry... and easy for those at the top to fund their own music.  But everyone else has to sweat more blood than ever to try an break through enough to sustain themselves - so they can continue making music.

Nontheless, from friction comes inspiration, so lets hope these slightly confusing times bring some more great songs and great bands from the wilderness.

(Sorry, had a bit of a rant there)

What have you been listening to recently?

I’ve been listening to old Blues tunes... tend to do that at Christmas.  Matt, I have on good authority, is seasoning the Pulled Apart by Horses album, which is great btw.

Finally, Gene Simmons recently said rock is 'finally dead', why is he wrong?

Erm... last line from the Spotify question: because from friction comes inspiration or something along those lines?

Thanks for talking to us, best of luck for 2015 and we hope to see you around the Midlands soon!

Many Thanks.
