Chances is the new EP from Berkshire Technical Metal band This is Shark Country. Following up on 2013’s Saviour, which attracted praise from the likes of Alex Baker from Kerrang Radio, the new EP is self-produced, and comes with a whirlwind of praise from other reviewers.

Kicking off with Sitting Pretty, the EP wastes no time in laying down its technical metal credentials. There is plenty of venom in the vocals, although they are cleaner than those on their first album. Unusually for a tech/melodic band, the tuning isn’t in the B/C range, but that doesn’t stop an in your face aggressiveness.

Next up is Ghosting which has a slightly ‘Coup de Grace’ era Orange Goblin feel to it, which can only be good! This song is a big riff, breakdown, and more riff! There is no letting up in the aural assault from the title track Chances either. There is a nice mix of grit and melody to this song, and some great work on the skins!

The last song on the EP is Forever In Waiting, which combines in your face guitars and vocals, with a dreamlike breakdown which reminds me of TesseracT or Periphary.

For those that like their metal heavy, but intelligent, with a generous portion of technical wizardry, this is an EP which will not disappoint.

Paul's recommended track: Forever In Waiting

For fans of: Periphary, Sikth, TesseracT, Opeth

Can you see these guys in the UK?: Can't see anything.
