If you're of the mindset that music should be fun and enjoyable then let me introduce you to Smokey Bastard. If you're of a different mindset, go back to listening to Megadeth.

Smokey Bastard are a UK based folk-punk-rock band, I assume they'd fall next to Gogol Bordello under the 'Gypsy Punks' banner if that word didn't carry such a stigma on these shores. Back To The Drawing Room is the new album from these guys and was borne from an insanely successful Pledge campaign, hitting their target in a ridiculous 15 hours. How have they rewarded the loyalty of their fans?

If you're not sure what folk-punk-rock is, 15 seconds of the opening track Archipelago should give you a damn good idea. The signature accordion and borderline pirate style backing vocals are a mainstay in this track and it provokes thoughts of fantasies from yesteryear. If you watch the video below, it just doesn't look right that this style of music is coming from those people - how looks can be deceiving. Following track Rats picks up the pace even more with a rockier feel in places than Archipelago. That being said, the folk elements shine through throughout the entire album, only temporarily being put on the back burner for a metal style riff in this track.

The storytelling style of folk music shines through on this album amidst the musical prowess. Tracks like Baba Yaga show this off to great effect and Rotter continues it in a very different manner. Feeling darker than the rest of the album. The backing 'ooooh' may have something to do with that though.

Alcobatical takes most of the folk out to begin with and feels like a pure punk-rock track. That doesn’t even last for 20 seconds though as the plucked guitars come back and the track features sentiments we've all fickly uttered the day after nights out. In particular the lyrics "waking up in a spinning room to the stench of stale regret" painting the picture all too well. Jester and Can Of Worms close out the album nicely with Jester providing a pretty standard album track before Can Of Worms sets about the end. The sinister style riff and the deeper vocals really give this the feel of a closing track and a good one at that.

So, with Back To The Drawing Room we have seen Smokey Bastard stake their claim to be considered the UK's representative in the folk-rock revolution. Do they do enough? Well, those that have contributed to the Pledge campaign are certainly not going to be disappointed and if you're looking for something that goes against the grain these guys really are for you.
