If you liked your female fronted bands to all sound exactly the same as they often can then you’re in the wrong place with Sky Valley Mistress. This is proper rock n roll right here and it’s ready to put Blackburn on the map!

The quartet had a good year in 2014 and are set to start 2015 with an excellent EP in Rivals, Hounds & Rebel Sisters. They wrote the three tracks whilst doing an obscene amount of touring in 2014 and you can feel that not only has upgrading to a four piece really paid off, but being on the road together for so long has really helped them bond and learn to use each other’s strengths.

Opening track Smoke Fairy is what I’d expect if Black Moth took a lesson in groove. There is a lot of focus on the vocals in this track initially, but once you notice the riff you’ll be hooked. So hooked that it might stick in your head for a whole day. Not a bad thing though as it’s a good opening track.

Wishbone is stuck in the middle of the three tracks and is the strongest track for singer Kayley Davies, showing off her full range. Another strong riff and a nice change in tempo in the middle of the track shows just how well these tracks are written and give it the feel of a seasoned band, not one on their second EP.

Closing out the EP is probably the best track on the EP, She Is So. It has the feel of an opening track, not a closing one. Again is showcases a great riff and more vocals that sound effortless as their most stretched. Another nice change of pace in the middle gives them a chance to show off a little and shortly afterwards that’s it.

Another small piece of what these guys have to offer. This is a tasty EP from Sky Valley Mistress – packing some nice riffs and interesting vocals. Is it one that will expose them to a wider audience? It deserves to be such is the standard of musicianship on show. Another band aiming to make 2015 their year and what a way to stake their claim. When they finally get around to writing an album we’ll be first in line to pick it up.
