Canadian Tech Death veterans from Montreal, yes Cryptopsy have released a new EP. The Book of Suffering – Tome 1. This is their first release for just over three years. Four tracks of technical mastery, this is to be the first in a series of EPs released from the Quebecians. Here is my verdict:

An awesome sample to kick things off which then smashes straight into high screams, blast beats and some insane guitar riffs. A complete wall of music attacks my ear drums. Then the instruments die and there are just screams a great little part to the song. Detritus is exactly what you would expect from a Technical Death Metal band, complicated areas mixed with extremely catchy riffs. There are definitely deathcore elements hidden within. One thing that is definitely noteworthy is the great sound already on show in the first song. Tech death needs a clear sound so that you can hear note after note. If it were muddy you would definitely struggle with it, but this has been recorded fantastically. You can clearly hear the music performed by these metal experts.

The Knife, The Head and What Remains starts off with an interesting, almost menacing guitar sequence which has your thoughts filled with wonder. Then bang, there’s that wall again. Monstrous vocals blasting over the top of one beast of a riff and a double kick that would cut through lead like it was butter. Throughout this song you realise that these guys are technically brilliant. Timings constantly changing and riff after riff of unfathomable note playing that boggles the mind but it truly makes you appreciate the effort put into every song.

More of the same from the third in line on this record. Halothane Glow has a very aggressive yet catchy riff which will have you humming it for days. The vocals are extremely forceful, it’s like throwing yourself in front of a bus and the screams are the bus. The pound at your ear drums throughout, but you don’t mind this. They complement the music so well. It ends with a haunting sample. A solid finish to a violent mash of awesomeness.

Finally (wishing this EP was longer now!), it all ends on Framed by Blood. If evil could orgasm it would spooge this all over the faces of the weak! Crunching melodies everywhere, followed by blasting drums, crazy vocals. This is literally everything that you would want from a Technical Death Metal EP.

To finish this little review of mine, first thing to state, there is no real problems with this EP except for one thing and I think it’s quite a major issue. It’s not long enough!!! After hearing these four songs I was desperate to listen on but it had all but quickly ended. There are promises on the horizon of more EPs to follow, so don’t disappoint Cryptopsy! My ears need more. A cracking foursome of songs though and they have great replay value. Anyway enough from me!
