If you're a fan of female fronted rock bands then you're in the right place. If you're a fan of plastic bands that have been thrown together because 'girls are sexy and will sell music' then you're in the wrong place. The Everlaine are doing their bit to put a bit more substance on the bones of the female fronted rock scene, picking up where bands like The Dirty Youth, Marmozets and Halestorm have dragged the standard of the genre to. What a perfect time to be trying to make a name for themselves.

The Secret's Out is a five track EP racking up around 20 minutes of top quality girl rock, that fits somewhere between the more symphonic bands like Nightwish and the rockier bands like the previously mentioned Halestorm. Musically it fits far easier into the later, with some dirtier, rockier elements, but the vocals delve into several genres without feeling 'lost'.

I Am A Fighter opens the EP, with a slightly more pop-like verse. Focussing mostly on Ellen Hallam's vocals. A wise choice as they're definitely the strongest element on show on I Am A Fighter. The chorus showcases this even better with a softer tone used. Only Stars has a bit more bass to it and a chunkier riff built in to it as well. It is a much better all round track and gives everyone in the band a bit more chance to show off. Ryan Cracknell gives a good performance on guitar and the bassline is strong.

Demons is the ballad of this release and serves it's purpose well. Girls will be able to connect with it and with that the guys will come along. Cracknell's guitar is a level above on this track and the vocals are again exemplary. So Much Better follows and is a pacier affair and, for me, the highlight of the EP. It seems to hold the attention better than what has come before and has a much rockier tone to it. Closing track Embers brings back the pop style vocals and has a much softer feel to the whole affair.

As a whole The Secret's Out has the potential to be a really strong opening EP for The Everlaine, so long as they're willing to put the graft in to get it out there. Give them a try and see what you think. If you like female fronted bands then there's very little chance of you not liking this.

Dan's recommended track: So Much Better

For fans of: Marmozets, Halestorm, Nightwish
