48hours

at The Asylum 2, Birmingham

by Daniel King - 30 March 2015

After having a chat to the lads in 48hours I ascended the stairs to a chilly room that The Asylum folks like to call '2'. The 'local support' were already on and, if I'm being honest, not warming up the crowd as much as they'd probably like to. Forgetting the name of the headlining band, with the singer stood right in front of them, compounded their efforts and the remaining few songs dragged on with an awkwardness in the air. Half a bottle of rum is no excuse really and no band is gonna get anywhere these days without respecting their peers.

When that was out of the way London based 48hours hit the stage, but only after awkwardly making their way through the crowd to set up their backline. What followed was around half an hour of well constructed and energetic songs played by a band that quite a few of those in attendance had not gone out to see. This makes the fact that there didn't seem to be anyone in the room that didn't enjoy what they witnessed even more impressive. There was a nervous nodding along in approval during the opening tracks and a warm applause after. Throughout the set this built and built, heads nodding harder and harder, until closing track Secrets where a few of the crowd went as far as a bit of a headbang. A well thought through setlist and enthusiastic on stage demeanor have a lot to thank for that.

For a band that are still very much in the 'underground' phase of their careers, these guys have some great tracks under their belts and an impressive stage presence. Whilst the highlight of the set was Forget, a real stand out track that packs some big riffs (something in there reminded me of something that Mark Tremonti might knock out), what was really interesting was that all of the tracks billed as 'new' sounded bigger and better than any others they popped into the set. Proof if nothing else that these guys are going in the right direction.

Finishing off the night were goth-punk...gunk...rockers Ashestoangels. Another band at the beginning of their journey and with the huge amounts of energy that they throw into their set you can see why there were already people there wearing their shirts. One to keep an eye on.
