Hardcore outfit wars have hardly been a band for five minutes, yet already they have attracted a fair amount of media praise, and come this summer, will have shared a stage with a host of highly regarded bands such as Bury Tomorrow and Defeater.

So, what about the debut EP – And So The Sea Will Claim Us All. Does it justify all the attention they’ve been getting?

Well, the answer to that question is, probably, but only just. The EP features 5 tracks, one of which – 00:01, is a short, mellow instrumental that brings the whole thing to a close. The concern here is that this laid-back outro is probably the strongest part of the record. The remaining four songs all follow a similar pattern; monstrously heavy riffs with harsh screams occasionally substituted for a more melodic delivery when it comes to the chorus – a tried and tested formula for bands of this ilk, but this may just be part of the problem. It is for the most part a little bland, a touch too safe and just not all that exciting.

It’s not all doom and gloom though, as there are moments of real promise scattered throughout. Live favourite, Weathered Eyes is genuinely excellent and is easily the pick of the bunch of the four songs proper, and when you factor in the fact that wars is a band still very much in it’s infancy, it has to be said that ‘And So The Sea Will Claim Us All’ is actually a pretty decent first step on the road to bigger and better things in the future.
