Over the past few years we’ve seen somewhat of a re-emergence of the pop-punk that flooded the scene back in the early noughties. Unfortunately, the majority of bands are more throwaway fodder than anything worth more than 5 minutes of your time…luckily this quartet from Spain took me a little by surprise! And here they are on the verge of releasing their second full-length LP, One More Fight.

Daylight hail from the beautiful setting of Barcelona, admittedly not the first band of their kind to feature twins (remember Madina Lake? No, me neither...), it’s something that lends a little uniqueness to their craft in a genre crowded with quality bands such as golden oldies like New Found Glory and Zebrahead as well as the new breed like Neck Deep. But what about the music you say?

Well the first thing is that it hooked me straight away, it’s almost the norm nowadays to expect some sort of intro and I was glad that the opening track Anthem of the Broken plunged the vocals of twins Wojtek and Olek Burek straight down my ears. The song reminds me of old-school Goldfinger with it’s simple song structure and similar vocal style, the only difference being you can tell frontman Woitek has an accent; but that certainly doesn't detract from the music.

Second track Kickbacks is a typical pop punk track with it’s catchy hooks and addictive drumming from Victor Vera. A song that would fit perfectly on the soundtrack of Tony Hawks Pro Skater or a Punk-O-Rama compilation. Transporting me further back to my high school years is first single from the album Consequences, it makes me want to go back and dig out my skateboard and put my cap on backwards, with it’s soaring melody and a chorus that begs to be sung aloud - this has fan favourite written all over it.

We Are Strong breaks things down with a stripped back, mellow style used during the verses but not losing any of the band’s charm when all the band members combine their talents for another big chorus. Another Day shows that the band have a softer side amongst all the fun and games of the other songs on the record. Some hip hop influences have a strong showing on Best Days Of Our Lifes alongside a more acoustic style; proving that the band are anything but one dimensional - there’s a nice little solo to be found here too.

The standard pop punk stylings return to the fray on End of the World with the staccato high-pitched guitars and twin vocals working very well, a well placed penultimate track. Final track Crazy Youth Gone Wild owes more than a few nods to Blink 182, in particular vocalist Tom DeLonge as Woitek sounds almost identical in places. By no means a bad thing it’s good to see a young band that aren’t afraid to wear their hearts on their sleeves and let their influences shine through.

One More Fight probably isn’t going to blow you away or take you by surprise, as it is mostly a by-the-numbers pop punk album which we’ve been hearing now for the better part of 20 years. However the quality of the recording and songwriting from such a young band helps to set it apart from other releases out there - if pop punk is your thing then this comes highly recommended, if not then this probably won’t change your mind on the genre.
