When we got informed we'd be conducting press reviews of Camden Rocks back in May I was pretty excited to check out the bands on the lineup that I hadn't heard before. There were a few that I picked up on from that line up, Press To Meco were one and Dinosaur Pile-Up were another. Unfortunately, clashes prevented me from taking in their set that day, but their new album, Eleven Eleven is the perfect chance to catch up on these guys.

If, like me, you're a fun of the grunge tones of the late 80s and early 90's then you'll be kicking yourself for not having picked up on these guys sooner. They've been around since 2007 and have slowly been building themselves a dedicated fan base. Their latest effort, Eleven Eleven, opens with a title track of sorts - 11 11. For the first 20 seconds you could be listening to anything, but once the distortion starts and the dirty riff fully kicks in. From there it's four minutes of pace grunge-style riffs and Yorkshire tinged vocals.

Red And Purple follows and the riffs get dirtier somehow. The track reminds me of what I think would happen if Nirvana and The Strokes got together and put out an album. Some tracks like Friend Of Mine tilt more towards The Strokes side of things, the gritty 'indie' style shining through.

If you've followed Dinosaur Pile-Up since the start you'll be accustomed to the huge sound that the three of them make, but Anxiety Trip might just be their biggest to date. Implementing some of The Pixies signature quiet-loud-quite timings, the track is a beast and the highlight of the album. Might As Well follows, the opening sounding very Nirvana-esque with the vocals sounding a bit more American 'punk-rock'. The combination is a ballad of sorts and a nice change to the intense riffs of its predecessors.

Gimme Something and Bad Penny are both full paced assaults on the ears with the latter having a Bronx tone, which is never a bad thing. These tracks between them only rack up around 4 minutes of your time, but it's a superb quality of minute you'll be spending listening to it. Crystalline is a humdinger for In Utero Nirvana, but a bit more upbeat and Cross My Heart closes the album with a 'nicer' track than has been experienced for the past 40 minutes and is a nice come down to finish on. A really very strong 40 minutes too, containing some brilliantly written rock songs that you'll tap and sing along to.

Dinosaur Pile-Up's latest album is upon us and it feels like a modern day grunge tale. It's punchy and it's tight. These guys deserve for this album to catapult them onwards and upwards and I can't wait to see it live next month.

Dan's recommended tracks: Crystalline, Red And Purple, Bad Penny
