Connor Tate: Drums

If you're around London and haven't heard of Greyhaven yet then you need to take notice and get to know these guys while they're still gigging around your area. If you're not from London, get listening to them now, because it won't be long before they break the shackles of the Big Smoke and make it to a venue near you.

Their debut EP, The Flood, is available for your listening delectation and for a band that has only been in existence for a few months it is nothing short of impressive. They describe themselves as having "pop hooks, fast guitars and heavy instrumentation" and they're not wrong.

Their EP draws on the styles of many modern bands, Black Veil Brides and The Amity Affliction seem to be just a couple whose styles are taken and given a personal touch. That's the important thing here though, it is given a personal touch. Too often we're seeing bands come through with little or no personality in their music.

At four tracks, plus a short interlude, the EP racks up around 15 minutes and I can tell you now, there's a lot worse you can do with 15 minutes of your day. Opening track Rival Tides has some tasty riffs and a catchy chorus, World Apart continues the feel of the first track with unique vocals and anthemic elements in the chorus. Mutiny slows things down a bit and has a big tinge of Avenged Sevenfold ballads in it. The final track on the EP is The Flood. This track brings a strong end point for the EP and just about leaves you wanting more.

So, a really solid opening from Greyhaven and well worth your time. To round this piece off, we caught up with the guys to have a chat about what makes Greyhaven tick:

Hi there, thanks for taking the time to talk to us, can you tell us a bit about Greyhaven?

We're a band that don't really know what we're doing but we're good at other stuff.

How did the band come about?

I formed the band after writing a few songs a couple of years ago. There were several lineup changes and numerous auditions before we'd even started, but we finally managed to settle on the lineup we currently have. We then spent about a year getting all of the parts down as we wanted them on the EP, before finally letting people hear what we'd spent so long doing.

We've seen above who does what on stage, but who does stuff like the songwriting?

The first EP was pretty much entirely myself writing the instrumentals with some help from our producer, and then Sam would write the vocal parts later. The next EP is definitely more of a group effort in terms of songwriting though.

What influences your music? Was it stuff your family forced upon you you grew to love?

There's so much that influences our music. In terms of actual bands that have influenced us there's Queen, Metallica, Rise to Remain, Northlane, Thy Art Is Murder, Bon Jovi, Blink 182 etc. For me personally, music was never something I cared for until I reached about 14/15, then for some reason I just got really into it. I started to discover all these bands and all these incredible genres of music and it just started to become a huge part of my life.

Your EP, The Flood, is out now, why do you think people should be listening to it?

It's something we spent so long working on, it'd be a shame for it to go by totally unnoticed. Some of the stuff Sam wrote for it totally floored me when I heard them for the first time.

You're just starting out on your journey now, but what are the aims for the next few years?

Next year it looks like we're going to be on a few tours, after that though it's really up in the air. We'd love to be playing Download and Reading and all those cool festivals, but we'd love to be doing some supports on some big tours. Brixton is one we've always wanted to play, hopefully we can make it happen one day!

A few more 'lighthearted' questions now, how have the gigs been going?

The shows have been alright actually! Seeing as we were starting from scratch again, we never really knew whether anyone would even bother checking us out, but there's been a few eager fans already. Plenty more shows booked for the next couple of months, and maybe a few bigger ones at the end of the year.

Any stories to tell from shows or studio time?

Recording is always a bit of a mixed experience. Some of the stuff we did only needed a few takes, but then towards the end of the recording process we were taking ages just to get one bar recorded. I think everyone went a bit manic over that time period. There hasn't really been anything eventful happening at shows as of yet, everything's gone pretty smoothly.

Who's the most talented member of the band?

Connor's alright at drums I guess.

Any annoying habits?

Sam has a habit of forgetting most things, so there's that. Jim's weird but I'm not sure if that's annoying or not.

Finally, anything you want to add?

Come to a show, check out the EP... Or don't I can't really force you to do anything. Peace.

Excellent. Cheers for taking the time to talk to us.
