Interview With Wojtek from Daylight

James talks to Wojtek from Daylight. Their album came out recently and you can check out our review of it here. You can also buy it here.

Hey, for anyone that may not know - who are Daylight and what are you all about?

Hi! Daylight is a pop-punk band from Barcelona (Spain), that’s been around for a while. With our latest album One More Fight we’ve done more tan 100 shows this 2015 through China, Japan, 15 EU countries and Russia. We love touring life, partying and writing songs. Music is our life.

How did the experience of recording the new album compare to your previous releases?

This is our third album, and the first one with the Burek brothers singing. We used to have a frontman, but in late 2012 his priorities changed (he had two jobs and got married, so there was no more time for Rock’n’Roll). We had to start from scratch, writing new songs, as a trio and start looking for a guitar player. Lucky us we found Albert, a guy that toured with us China summer 2013. A new Daylight was born.

What's the reception to your new album been like?

Since the day it went out, we had a really good reception. Our old-school fans love it, and a lot of new people from Japan, USA, South America and Europe, got into it. Today I’ve been looking back at our Google Calendar and I’m really happy with all the work done. Sometimes people don’t realize the amount of effort unsigned bands go to, to keep up with their projects.

How was the tour last month? Any future plans for 2016?

This last month has been busy. We played a festival in Italy and 9 gigs across United Kingdom.
Imagine driving Barcelona - Bologna - UK - Barcelona, that’s around 7000km, we made a calculation and that’s 80 hours (3days). A lot of people would hate the road, we don’t. In 2016 we’re going to record a new album, and hopefully visiting all the countries we didn’t have the chance visiting this year.

Who were your biggest influences when you first started out as a band?

Each member has their own influences, from Pop-Punk to Rock and Metal. When we started, we were listening a lot to Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nofx and to all the Rock classics. It was 2004, and we were fifteen - a lot of things changed.

Any funny stories from the road you wish to share?

Can you imagine having a car breakdown and some fans spot you on the highway and stop to help? True story.

What's the tipple of choice backstage?

We’re really into beer, IPA, Ale, Lager. We try to ask for local beer in every city we visit and it's even better if it’s crafted. Chinese beer is like water, but Japanese tastes really good. If we had to choose, Belgian or Polish are our bests. Olek loves Bourbon, Albert and Victor Rum and I love Gin.

If you weren't in a band what do you see yourselves doing?

Music made us who we are today; it’s been shaping us since we were kids so, I can’t imagine us without being in a band. If we don’t succeed and make a living from this, we will keep playing asides from our fulltime job. When we’re not touring, each member has a side job, or project that assures an income to pay bills.

Do you think that music-streaming services such as Spotify have helped young bands like yourselves to get out there on the map or has it hindered your progress?

People are not buying records anymore, so other ways of legal distribution appeared. We don’t agree with the amount of money we get for every play, but we love the idea of having all the music of the world in your pocket. It helped us getting more people to listen our music and as a result more followers.

What advice would you give to any young musicians out there?

Try to improve everyday, rehearse 4 times a week minimum 4 hours. Take this as your job, set goals, and work hard to achieve them. If you’re not happy with the results, try different formulas. There’s always a way. Don’t see problems; look for solutions.

Finally, can you name one album that you couldn't live without?

Bon Jovi – New jersey
