Introducing: Adelphia

By Daniel King - 26 February 2015

Adelphia are:

Nicholas Crampton - Lead Vocals and Rhythm Guitar

Jordan Wood - Lead Guitar

Jay Sanderson - Bass Guitar

Rik Gilbert - Drums and Backing Vocals

In the latest of our Introducing features I am happy to bring Adelphia to your ears.  They are one of Nottingham's finest up and coming alternative rock bands and have been making waves at festivals up and down the country over the past year or so.

On first listen you can really hear that they are trying to live up to their own billing of being a 'clean' band. Everything from the vocals, through the guitars and drums, down to the level of production is very clean and very precise.

One of their previous singles, 'Do Your Worst', uses the most fashionable style of vocals around at the moment - the accent.

Biffy Clyro seem to have brought this back into fashion for rock bands, Twin Atlantic carried it on and these guys seem to have picked up on it too. Although quite why there is a Scottish twang to the vocals in this track is beyond me.

It isn't just the vocals though there is a completeness about this band. They don't sound like they're new to the game, they sound like they've got years of experience.

New single 'If I Fall' continues this theme and shows just how accomplished these guys are. The vocals feel more strained and during the verses, but throughout the chorusses they're back to their best, soft and purposeful. Ably backed by guitars that both compliment the vocals and also pick them up and push them on. The drumming in the track takes a back seat for the most part, but it is skillful and when you pick up on it it adds a lot to the track.

We spoke to the band to find out how they started, what makes them tick and to have a chat about the new single:

First of all thanks for taking the time to do this, can you introduce yourselves and Adelphia to the soon to be adoring public.

Not a problem, I'm Rik and I play drums for Adelphia. We're a clean alternative rock band from Nottingham

Can you let us in on your influences and why you started the band in the first place?

Personally I have an eclectic range of influences musically but for this project I'd say bands like Taking Back Sunday, You Me At Six, Mallory Knox, Deaf Havana and Bring Me The Horizon influenced how we write and sound. The band share a lot of those influences with touches of other bands individually which gives us a wide perspective when it comes to songwriting, I think it's a great way to be able to write.

Initially I put an advert online to start this style band after a previous band had fallen through and I felt starved of the music I wanted to make, so I posted the ad and Nick replied after a few days. I went to his and we jammed out 4 song ideas and just connected well as people and musically, it's something that happens very rarely and we both felt it on that day and knew we had something that worked. Soon after, we found Joe and then auditioned Jay after a few part time bassists trialed for the band.

Once all 4 of us got together in a room, we just had a sound forming that was kinda out of our control, we knew what we wanted from our song-writing and then we just developed quickly but at the same time we all felt rewarded for finding 4 driven members with the same goals. From the start and to this day, I think that's why we started, carried on and still carry on. The passion for creating the music we like and delivering it to people who'll enjoy it.

Sorry for the essay haha!

No worries, good to hear a proper story behind a band! With the wealth of music out there at the moment it is harder than ever to 'make it' as a band, why have you chosen to get into this scene?

We all said at the start that we aren't in it for the money, we all stand by that but obviously as you grow as a band you need to financially support that which is really tough. As it's often said, if we could make music for the rest of our lives for free and live then we would but unfortunately for us and many others, this industry demands a lot of financial commitment in order to survive but if you do it for the passion and the love of making music then money is just a bi-product of doing something you love anyway. That being said,  I've never considered 'making it' as being rich or a money based concept. More of a 'I can do something I love for the rest of my life without living in total poverty'. I think the rest of the band would agree with me that we would happily sacrifice luxuries or ideal living situations if we can continue doing this. That for me is 'making it'.

Your single 'If I Fall' came out on 9th February, what can people expect from it?

The single came out on the 9th and we received an overwhelming amount of positive feedback! We knew there was a fair amount of hype over our new release because it had been over a year since we put out a single but we didn't anticipate how supportive and positive people would be. It's really humbling to know that even if you don't churn something out every 3 months that people will still stick by you. If you haven't heard the single yet then I'd describe it as a heavier/darker version of our older stuff but with a lot more thought out writing processes and structuring.  If I fall was the first song we wrote that just kicked us in the face when it was being written. Hopefully that feeling comes across when people listen to it.

It has been featured on the Alex Baker show on Kerrang! Radio, how did it feel to get radio play from Kerrang?

I'm personally a fan of Alex Bakers show and to be a part of that was a honour for us! He delivers a great array of music that isn't a single genre but still delivers something collectively that makes you keep listening. When we got the email saying we were going to be played, I remember us all just laughing with excitement and then instantly ringing close friends/family to tell them.

(thank you Steph, you WERE right).

You've also had a lot of support from BBC Introducing, they seem to be doing wonders for some younger bands these days?

BBC introducing is an amazing outlet for young and fresh artists coming through all over the UK, it's really comforting to know there's a sector of the BBC that carer for all fresh talent that are trying to make the first steps into the music industry. They've looked after us from the start and have played every single thing we've ever sent in, they've been a massive backbone for some of the opportunities we've had over the lifespan of the band and I would recomend any new bands to get on board with them!

You're heading out on the road in the next few weeks, how are you feeling about your first tour?

Tour has been a buzzword that's been thrown around in the Adelphia camp since day 1. Its one of those milestones we've all aspired to achieve and now it's finally booked and announced I guess we're all a little apprehensive as to what's going to happen, whether we can pull it off and what the reception is going to be like when we finally play around the UK. We love playing shows but on a general basis have only played around the midlands so we are all excited to see what's in store elsewhere alongside playing some amazing bands, it's a great line up and I'm sure some crazy things are going to happen.

Why should people be spending their hard earned cash on coming to see you?

Every band on tour are hardworking and put their all into their music, coming to see one of the shows would mean you get to experience that face to face which in this day & age is rarely done because the internet makes music etc so easily accessible and demotes the value of the art people listen to. I believe Getting to see bands live is how music fully inspires people to create outside of audibly taking it in. You get to experience passion, emotion and impact to a whole new degree.

That's worth the ticket costs Everytime in my eyes.

You played Download Festival 2014, the holy ground of British rock and somewhere that bands become immortalised, how was it walking out on to the Red Bull stage knowing Black Stone Cherry and Volbeat were playing just across a field from you?

Everytime I get asked that question it doesn't feel like it was us that played it (laughs) it almost year on hasn't sunk in yet that we were actually a part of that lineup. When it got announced that we were playing, me and Nick were at his house and we just started laughing and looking at each other like 'is this real life?' (Laughs) it's one of those mental moments in life where you feel like you've stepped into someone's shoes that actually got it right. We feel so so lucky to this day that we got that chance and I'm sure it'll stick with us all for the rest of our lives!

Did you get to see any bands whilst you were there? You probably walked past me dressed as a big green crocodile in the arena at some point.

I WISH id walked past you! A big green crocodile sounds exactly like who I'd want to stumble across at download (laughs) that would be so much fun. "Just chillin with the croc" but aside from that, we didn't get to see that many bands. We did a fair amount of press and just catching up with people that we hadn't seen for ages in the backstage area, so that took up most of our experience but I managed to catch Bring Me The Horizon, Aerosmith, Linkin Park (incredible) and some of the other bands from the Red Bull competition that played.

If you could book your ideal tour, who would you tour with and where would you play?

Crikey.. Too many choices here.. Umm.. Ok, the lineup would probably be us, Mallory Knox, Don Broco and Deaf Havana.

I think that would be a fun lineup, they all seem pretty similar humourwise and would be fun to travel around with them and they all make belting music so it'd be a right laugh. We would tour around the uk in smaller venues and then finish on an arena (personal life goal haha).

Finally, something I'm asking everyone I interview this year, who is the best band in the world?

(An answer was provided here...I don't think that anyone wants me to post the answer though. It was very naughty of you Rik!).

Thanks very much for taking the time out to talk to me. Best of luck with the new single and the tour and I hope to catch you at a show in the near future!

Thank YOU! If you come to a show then you need to wear that crocodile outfit. No compromises.
