Earlier in the year Being As An Ocean were over in the UK playing Slam Dunk Festival. We caught up with Joel them for a chat.

First up, can you tell us what Being As An Ocean is about?

BAAO is a collection of friends and musicians, whose aim is to create and perform beautiful, thoughtful, artistic music.

Did you guys enjoy playing Slam Dunk Festival?

We had a blast at Slam Dunk and were honoured to be apart of some of the coolest shows we have been apart of in the UK.

You played three sets over the weekend, which would you say was the best?

I think that my favourite Slam Dunk date had to be the second day in the South. I think we played our best set of the weekend and we were all really feeling the crowd’s energy.

Did you get to check out many other bands?

I did! I got the chance to enjoy the three days because we played pretty early in the day. I loved walking around and watching as many bands as I could. I got to see Cartel, You Me At Six, Taking Back Sunday, Don Broco, Beartooth, Comeback Kid, Architects, Thy Art Is Murder, Lower Than Atlantis, Millencolin, Neck Deep, Bane, Stick To Your Guns, and Trash Talk.

You've done UK tours with bands like August Burns Red, how does Slam Dunk compare to that?

I think they are two different worlds entirely. I loved the shows we did with August Burns Red because of the higher level of intimacy. I loved and appreciatedthe Slam Dunk experience because of the craziness of it all. It is very well organized, but the sheer amount of people milling about listening to the bands they love and finding new music to appreciated and enjoy is astounding. A chance to play to someone new is always very exciting for us.

So far in 2015 you've toured Asia and Australia, how was that?

Touring so far this year has been absolutely incredible. We have played some of the best shows of our careers so far, seen new and beautiful lands, and have had times we will never forget. We love touring as much if not more than writing the actual music.

You've got the new album out in June, what can we expect from it?

I would anticipate a heavier, faster Being As An Ocean than you are used to. This is our most energetic release to date and we are stoked to see what everyone thinks of it.

Will you be heading back over here after its release?

Yep! We are coming back in the fall with The Amity Affliction, Defeater, and Fit For A King for the Never Say Die! Tour.

The faces in Being As An Ocean have changed a bit over the past 18 months, does it feel settled now?

To be honest, I think we all felt pretty settled after one/two tours that we did with the new line up. Michael and Connor had no problem settling into the writing process and our rigorous touring schedule.

How has the change in personnel affected the writing/recording process for the new

album?

It hasn’t much, just progressed. We are becoming more and more collaborative in our song writing as the band ages.

Is there anything else you wish to share with the MNN readers?

Know that no matter what you are going through, no matter what people in authority might say, you are valuable beyond measure and deserving of all Love. Hope you like the new tunes and we see you at some upcoming shows!

Much Love!

Thanks for taking the time to talk to us
