Interview With Spence from Bury The Memory

We have a chat with Spence from Bury The Memory about the band, what they've been up to and what they've got planned.

First up, can you tell us a bit about Bury The Memory?

BTM has been around for approx 2 years now, we are a melodic post-hardcore band from Manchester, UK! We've spent that time travelling the UK playing shows all over, including a recent tour organised by ourselves.

Your new single, Viewpoint, has been unveiled to the world, tell us a bit about it.

Viewpoint was written by the five of us as our "soft" song and to show how the band is moving forward with our sound. Originally the song had next to no message however throughout the writing process we realised what the song entailed which is that we want to stand out and not be on the back of anything else.

Is this song a warm up for something bigger on the horizon?

It's a track off our extended EP coming soon, we're hoping to hit the studio in the coming months to record the full thing. This will then be followed by merch, new videos hopefully directed by Zak Pinchin again as we love his work! And even more.

You’ve spoken about trying to create your own style and not copy other bands, what have you done to achieve this?

We take what we like from existing bands and write on that, if it sounds like something else we take it back and re-write until it sounds original to us and we like it. We all have different musical backgrounds ranging from thrash metal, to pop-punk to hardcore and djent so we each take what we like from those and attempt to formulate our own style/genre from that.

Is there someone in the band that tends to do most of the writing or is it shared between you all?

The writing process is shared between us all, however Finbar (our guitarist) does the majority of the back bones of songs with us all giving our own input. As stated above we take our own inspirations and likes to create a blend in our writing, whether that be drum patterns, lyrics or riffs.

How do you think Bury The Memory are equipped to survive in todays musical climate?

We believe we are equipped especially given the amount of praise and good attention we've been getting from our shows and the video combined. The aim we're moving towards keeps coming closer and we're gonna make sure we make it there.

What else have you been up to in 2015?

We did a weekender tour back in February, the single and video in the past few months and organising merch printing and studio time at the present.

On to you personally, what inspired you to join a band?

Myself and Mike (our vocalist) was part of another band before BTM and once that band broke up we wanted to continue so strongly we decided to start up a new band and gain new members and continue. Then from that point we've been reinventing and reimagining our image and sound until now.

Which modern bands do you look up to?

Blood Youth (ex-Climates), Stray From The Path, Every Time I Die, Of Mice & Men, Underoath, AlexIsOnFire, Architects, Bring Me The Horizon, Stick To Your Guns.

What is your stand out memory from going to gigs as a fan?

Stage diving at The Browning soon as  the song dropped in, absolute rush. Or grabbing the mic during Hacktivists set and rapping along.

In terms of Bury The Memory, any funny memories from gigs?

Tickling Toast so much till he fell off a chair, twice! Most of the time we're too drunk to remember! Oh and also when Fin started having a panic attack on the bus from not knowing where he is and monologging in the service station toilets... Still not sure why he was doing that, again, most likely drunk!

Before you hit the stage do you have a routine? Knocking back a bottle of rum? Praying to the old gods and the new?

Usually we'll stop off somewhere for a couple pints and some food and a couple drinks at the venue. Either that or we'll take to the rider.

Finally, anything interesting that you’d like to impart on the readers?

If you've heard our music before then be ready because the EP is going to be our next major release! We are planning more tours for the future year and cannot wait to reach out to more people on the way. With our merch being released soon, Come say hey at the merch table!
